The Good News House is a Habitat for Humnity project in Ann Arbor, Michigan

NO  BUILDING  SKILLS  ARE  REQUIRED !!!

If you have some experience or expertise we’d like to know about it, so that we can best use your special talents.  However, most of our volunteers have never been involved with building a house and/or landscaping.  In fact, many have never swung a hammer or planted a tree before!  All that’s needed is your willingness to learn and to help in those ways which your physical stamina allows – and your desire to work with others to provide a home for a deserving family.

The Huron Valley affiliate (HHHV) of Habitat for Humanity International provides the site for our house, as well as the architectural drawings, permits, etc.  A paid construction manager is also provided by the HHHV.  This individual handles the ordering of construction materials and arranges for them to be delivered to the building sites.  Our local group provides a house leader, who is responsible for coordinating or efforts with those of the HHHV staff.

Our local group also provides a Shift Supervisor and/or Crew Chief, who works with the volunteers for that particular day/partial day.  As a volunteer, this is the person to whom you may go for assistance and direction.  Generally, we ask individuals to sign up for four or eight hour blocks of time, although you may leave whenever you need to do so.  During the first month of the build, volunteers are needed Monday through Saturday between 8am and 4pm.  Later, the hours and days will be reduced.  Work crews usually consist of 10-15 volunteers.  You might also want to check out the webpage on this site which details the construction process, in order to determine the nature of the work undertaken at various times anticipated for the 2006 build.  Individuals under the age of 14 are generally not allowed on the construction site.  Click here for more information on age restrictions relative to construction activity.

If you are interested in helping, you may contact your local church representative (see Links) or Donna Wegryn, Volunteer Coordinator for the Good News House.  Please provide them with your name, phone number and email address.

Also, we are legally required to ask each volunteer to complete a release of liability form (one time only) before he or she works at the site.  It would be helpful if this form could be completed before your first work day.  Click here if you are an adult who will be working.  Click here if you are a minor, between the ages of 14-17.  Thanks!
