The Good News House is a Habitat for Humnity project in Ann Arbor, Michigan

During the 2011 building season, we rehabilitated two houses in Ypsilanti.  They are located at 1229 Warner and 1246 Warner, across the street from one another.  The Carlas Pope family was selected for the house at 1229 Warner, and the Robin Gatson family was selected for the 1246 Warner house.  The Pope home has already been dedicated, and we anticipate the dedication of the Gatson home during the late spring/early summer of 2012.Following is some information about our new families!

1229 Warner Carlas Pope & two of her daughters - Jayda & Aniya 1246 Warner Robin Gatson & son, Trey and daughter, Za'Karee .
Hello, My name is Carlas Pope I am 42 years old and blessed to have 4 beautiful children; DeVaughn (24 years old), Shakayla (21 years old) Jayda (11 years old) Aniya (8 years old) and wonderful grandson Devaughn Jr. (2 years old). I live in Ypsilanti and graduated from Willow Run High School in 1987. I am presently working at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital as a Claims Processing Representative and I have been there for almost 20 years.

Jayda and Aniya both attend South Arbor Charter Academy in Ypsilanti. Jayda is in the 6th grade. She enjoys cheerleading, playing the violin and spending time with her big sis Kayla and big bro bro. Aniya is in the 3rd grade. She enjoys going to school, playing with her friends, riding her bike and also hanging out with her big sis Kayla and big bro bro.

Robin Gatson has just been selected recently as the new homeowner of this house, so we have not yet received a great deal of information from HHHV.  Everyone who has worked with her as she accumulates her "sweat equity" hours says she is a wonderful and hard-working woman!

Robin has been working at the U of M hospital for 13 years and currently is a cook preparing patient meals.  Her son, Trey, is one year old and her daughter, Za'Karee is 6 years old.  (Za'Karee says her Mom is 29 years old!)

Selecting a family is an important and delicate part of the Habitat building process, and it is handled by the Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley (HHHV) Family Support Committee. Three criteria are used to select families: need for decent affordable housing; ability to meet financial criteria; willingness to partner with Habitat.  Partner families must be able to make a $500 down payment, contribute 300 hours per adult family member of "sweat equity" (volunteer time) into their house or another Habitat house, and make payments on a 25-year, interest-free mortgage administered by HHHV.

After the family is selected, the Family Support Committee steps in to ensure that the family becomes a part of the construction process and is successful in its new home. The committee maintains contact with the family throughout the construction process, addresses any construction problems, and offers the family financial planning and home maintenance workshops.
