SPONSOR RESOURCES
There is a real wealth of ideas for recruiting volunteers, raising money and generally increasing awareness of Good News House activities among the 18 sponsoring congregations and our local affiliate, Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley (HHHV). The purpose of this page is to share these ideas with one another. Your ideas are not only welcome - they are essential! Please send any potentially useful materials to Donna Wegryn, webmaster, so that they too can be included. Thanks!

RECRUITING VOLUNTEERS
Westside United Methodist Church has been very successful in recruiting volunteers for lunches, weekdays and weekends, so we've asked them to share their "recruitment materials." They have graciously complied. Click here to view an article which could be used in a bulletin or newsletter, followed by a sample sign-up sheet and volunteer reminder notice.
The Unitarian Universalist Church has been particularly good at recruiting individuals to join work crews throughout the week - as well as filling its quotas on the days where it has primary responsibility for volunteers! Barb Pickett shared with us one of their secrets - a calendar available at services with all possible workdays for volunteer sign-ups. The First United Methodist Church of Ann Arbor is now trying out their idea as well!
RAISING MONEY
Dexter United Methodist Church raises almost all of it's money through one event - a Spaghetti Dinner & Silent Auction! Click here to see a sample of its advertising for this event. Dan Teare cautions everyone, however, that they make no money on the dinner. It's purpose is to recruit folks to attend and participate in the silent auction, which is the ACTUAL source of their revenues!
The Dixboro United Methodist Church also relies heavily on an annual fundraising activity for the majority of it's funding - a flower sale planned to coincide with Mother's Day. Click here to view their advertising materials and order form. Whitmore Lake Wesley also sponsors a Mother's Day flower sale but couples it with a craft fair.
The Milan Marble Memorial United Methodist Church tried a new fund-raising event in 2006 - a partnership with a local restaurant. It was so successful that they expanded it for their primary fund-raising event in 2007! Click here to see their advertising materials.
The Cherry Hill UMC is sponsoring an Italian Night in 2007. It features a FREE Italian dinner as an enticement to participate in their fundraising auction and craft show. If successful, this will become an annual event. Click here to see their advertising flyer.
Both the Unitarian Universalist (UU) and First Methodist of Ann Arbor (FUMC-AA) churches use graphics at church services to alert congregants to the funding needs for the Good News House. UU uses a hammer and FUMC-AA uses a large thermometer. Both mark their graphic to show the amount raised to date.
Calvary UMC has a "Klatter Kollection" each Sunday in May, with the proceeds committed to the Good News House. They pass around a small gardening pail for change (or bills!) to ensure a noisy collection!
The UU Church created a cardboard house many years ago. On the roof of this house, they paste construction paper "shingles" with the name of each individual who has made a financial contribution to the Good News House. They make this house available following services, so that additional shingles can be purchased. This has traditionally been an effective method of fund-raising for them. FUMC-AA is trying the same thing this year - for the first time. Click here to see FUMC-AA's notification to its congregation regarding this model. They are also allowing shingles to be "purchased" by volunteering to work on the build.
First United Methodist of Ann Arbor has been very effective in raising their pledge through an annual mailing to secure both volunteer and financial support. Click here to view a sample of the materials sent.
RAISING AWARENESS
It doesn't seem possible that an individual attending Calvary United Methodist Church could be unaware of the church's involvement with the Good News House! Some years ago, Calvary sponsored a brunch and concert after church. The brunch/concert quickly evolved into an entire Sunday morning service about Habitat - music, speakers and all! This year they will also include a skit provided by the youth of the church. Click here to see a flyer advertising their 2006 Good News House service.
FUMC AA has prepared articles for the church newsletter. This year, they received "top billing" for two months in a row! Click here to see copies of the articles. Also, their church provides a 4 minute opportunity to present to the congregation each year. It is generally a combination of a video and a speaker.
