The Good News House Committee is a non-profit group of organizations which have come together to build a house each year for a deserving family in Washtenaw County. It has been operating since 1997 and has built twelve houses and rehabbed two more during that time. Because of this, fourteen families are now home owners - families who would otherwise have not been able to purchase a house.
In 2010, there are 20 churches in Washtenaw County which have joined together to rehabilitate two existing homes, but anyone who is interested in helping is welcome! It is not necessary to be a member of one of the sponsoring churches. Our Habitat support at the local level is provided by the Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley affiliate (HHHV). HHHV was incorporated in 1989 and began construction of its first house in 1990. At the close of the year 2007, HHHV had dedicated 77 homes to shelter adults and children in Washtenaw County - including the twelve Good News Houses.
HHHV is one of 84 local affiliates of Habitat for Humanity of Michigan (HHM), which is - in turn - affiliated with Habitat for Humanity International (HHI). HHI was founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller. Through its efforts, more than 150,000 houses have been built, providing more than 250,000 people with safe, decent, affordable shelter in all 50 US states and 87 other countries around the world. Two of its most famous volunteers are U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn Carter.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization building simple, decent, affordable housing in partnership with people in need. Volunteers and partner families provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat for Humanity houses. Habitat for Humanity houses are sold to partner families at no profit and with no interest charged; mortgage payments are used to build more houses.
